Thursday's Thirst Quencher: Iced Green Tea

A couple of years ago I fell in love with "Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng and Honey". I'm a "diluter" and don't like drinks that are too sugary and sweet. This drink had just the right balance of sweetness and flavor, I was hooked! I went to pick up a jug a few weeks ago but for the first time I looked at the label. I was surprised to find that it has high fructose corn syrup in it!!! I couldn't believe it.  I knew at that point that I'd just have to make my own. I'm glad I did because it came out great!

Ingredients:
Water
7 Green tea bags
Honey, approx 1/2 cup for 2 qt container
splash of lemon, optional
ice, optional
mint, optional

Add water to the pitcher until it's about 3/4 full. Pour the water in a pot and bring to a boil. Take paper "tabs" off of tea bags (the string can stay), and add to pot of water. Let boil for about 5 minutes.

Pour the tea into the pitcher making sure that no tea bags fall in. Do not discard tea bags yet. Add honey to taste and stir well. At this point, either add ice, more water or both. If adding extra water, pour the water over tea bags first to get any remaining flavor from them, then add to pitcher. Add a splash of lemon juice if desired. Stir, chill, enjoy!

Notes:
  • The tea will likely settle. Stir before serving.
  • Garnish with a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint.
  • Experiment with different teas.
  • Experiment with different ingredients (ex. - put a small slice of ginger in the water).
Do you have a favorite iced tea?

  1. This will be a must try! I love ice tea - especially in the summer. I really enjoy Southern Style Sweet Tea (with lots of lemon). I just recently got a recipe I like where you boil the water and then add the sugar (to create "sugar water"). Once the sugar has dissolved you add the tea bags and turn off the heat allowing the tea to steep while the water cools.

    1. Hi Nicole! Apologies for the late reply. :) That is such a great idea! I can imagine that ensures the sugar is fully dissolved. Thanks for sharing!
